Cummings Happy with Mr Bogart Ahead of 2014 Pago Pago Stakes

March 25th, 2014

Having quickly risen to prominence and registered as a two-year-old to watch this season, trainer Anthony Cummings is confident exciting prospect Mr Bogart will perform well and secure a maiden race win in this weekend’s Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) for colts and geldings.

Unlucky to finish second to Valentia in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on March 15th, Cummings revealed the Northern Meteor colt has returned to work well, contesting a particularly promising hit-out at Randwick on Tuesday.

“He was a bit unlucky last time” Cummings told TVN immediately after working on Tuesday morning.

“He was held-up and when he finally got out he had no momentum.”

Displaying a keen final-straight sprint despite being blocked for a run in the Skyline Stakes, Cummings firmly believes Mr Bogart will be much better for the near-miss, particularly following this week’s ideal preparation.

“He was only beaten a neck and I think that will prove to be good form” Cummings added.

“And he worked really well here this morning.

“He goes into the race with his best chance of winning”.

Debuting with a competitive fifth amongst classy opposition in the Ritz Cinema Handicap (1200m) on February 22nd, Cummings has underlined the Group 1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 12th as the major target for Mr Bogart this preparation, and is confident of carrying winning form into the major event for two-year-olds following an impressive showing this weekend.

Offering the winner a ballot-free entry into the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th, Cummings said even if successful in the Pago Pago Stakes, Mr Bogart is unlikely to accept a position in the final field for the world’s richest race for two-year-olds, for which he is currently offered little chance of success at a long quote of $201.
